It's a wash

Moving the laundry from the washer to the dryer this morning I discovered that I'd brilliantly managed to wash my mobile phone. Sadly, it didn't survive the ordeal.

So, Monday morning found me driving off to the nearest Cingular Wireless storefront to finally migrate my AT&T Wireless account to Cingular and pick out a new phone. Apple iSync compatibility was my number one concern, and to satisfy that need I ended up spending more than I probably otherwise would have -- on a phone that's a bit larger than I'd have otherwise chosen. I picked up a Nokia 6620. I also had to swap out [info]equiraptor's old Sony phone for a Nokia 6230 since Cingular refuses to play with any old AT&T locked phones. Bummer.

The new phone talks iSync quite well -- it even pulls the pictures I have set for people (from AIM or by hand) in my OS X address book. With SymbianOS the phone can even run PuTTY, which is kinda neat but strange. The built in mail client can do IMAP4 SSL/TLS, which means I'm not scared to actually use it on an account I care about.

It's just a tri-band, not a quad-band, but I haven't found the lack of 900MHz to be too much of a hinderance in Europe. Overall I'm pretty happy with it.

I traded in my 6310i like 6 months ago for my 6230 and haven't regretted it. Reception, which was my big thing with the 6310i, is actually better..

Hm, I'll have to check that one out.

The biggest downside of the 6230 that I can see is that it's not a series 60 device, so it lacks when it comes to software support (like iSync). I'd have probably gone with a 6230 instead of the larger 6620 if that hadn't been the case.

Can you use GPRS/EDGE and BlueTooth to get a computer online with it?

I have a ghetto phone that lacks a color screen, has an antiquated system for inputting text messages, doesn't do aim and has no camera. So I'm closer to 1999 :).

I still don't know how to / if I can use internet on it with virgin mobile..

My brother sent me a nokia 7610 from England and, judging by the guys that have orgasmed over seeing it, I think it's a good thing? The features are cool and all, but I miss my simple ghetto phone (I sent it to my sister).

At least it was your cell phone and not your iPod or some other piece of equipment that is more expensive to replace. I'd probably still be using my kyocera phone had I not lost it in snow (only later to find it after the snow had melted) last winter.

iSync synchronization or bluetooth, what's that? I have two separate address books that are totally out of sync. Go me! Then again I am using prepaid and only use the phone when I really need it. Most of my business dealings use my landline/e-mail/aim..

[info]ivo: Sony Ericsson

I remember when I bought the AT&T T616 after you bought one. That was November 2003 I think.

Since then, I got a company phone from T-Mobile, that was the T610. I unlocked the T616 for $15 in the Netherlands and slapped in a Cingular Prepaid card for Chantal.

Then the company switched to Cingular, so now I have a T637, and an unlocked T610 that is still lying idle.

I still like the Sony Ericsson T-series a lot. It's small and has all the features that I need (voice, bluetooth and SMS).

Yeah, the T616 was superior to this new phone in a lot of ways.
